class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">EPF scheme is one of the key schemes that help employees build a sizable retirement corpus. The EPF scheme was introduced in 1952 for the welfare of employees. The scheme is governed by the Employees Provident Fund Act, 1952 and managed by the Employees&#8217; Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How-EPF-scheme-works\"><\/span>How EPF scheme works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Under this scheme, both the employer and employee contribute equally to the EPF account every month. However, it is the employer&#8217;s responsibility to deposit the whole amount to the EPF account. Generally, the employee\u2019s share is deducted from their monthly salary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">For all such EPF transfers, it is mandatory for an employee to have a Universal Account Number (UAN), which is allotted by the EPFO. The UAN acts as an umbrella for multiple Member IDs allotted to an individual by different employers. The intent is to link multiple IDs of an individual under a unique number.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Applicability-of-the-EPF-Act\"><\/span><strong>Applicability of the EPF Act<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">The EPF scheme mandatorily applies to all the establishments that have employed a minimum of 20 people. The employer must obtain EPF registration within 1 month of attaining the employee strength.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Even if the employee strength of a registered establishment falls below the requisite number, the rules or regulations of the act will continue to apply to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Establishments with less than 20 employees can also opt for <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/learn\/voluntary-registration-under-gst\/\">voluntary registration<\/a>. All the employees of such an establishment will be eligible for EPF right from the beginning of their employment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EPF-contribution-rate-and-breakup\"><\/span><strong>EPF contribution rate and breakup\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">For most employees, the contribution rate is 12% of the fixed wages of an employee, excluding HRA. You, as an employer, need to contribute equally to the EPF account.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><strong><em>There are certain situations when a 10% rate is applicable. For instance, if a company meets the following criteria:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-read-aloud-multi-block=\"true\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 500;\" data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Has employed less than 20 employees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 500;\" data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Has suffered losses more than its entire net worth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 500;\" data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Belongs to beedi, brick, jute or guar gum industry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 500;\" data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Is a sick industrial company and which has been declared as such by the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><strong>Here\u2019s the breakup of EPF contribution:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">The whole 12% of an employee\u2019s salary goes to their EPF account w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">hile the employer\u2019s contribution is divided among the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-read-aloud-multi-block=\"true\">\n<li data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">8.33% to the Pension Fund<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">3.67% to the EPF account<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example<\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">A salary includes Basic Pay, HRA, Dearness Allowance, and other allowances (includes variable components). The EPF component is calculated on the fixed part of a salary excluding HRA. This means, the EPF is calculated on the fixed part<\/span><span style=\"font-family: ff-more-web-pro, 'PT Serif', Georgia, serif; font-size: 19px;\">\u00a0of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: ff-more-web-pro, 'PT Serif', Georgia, serif; font-size: 19px;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">the salary, which is Rs 876 (12% of Rs 7,300).<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">But, in <\/span><b>scenario 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">, the fixed component is greater than Rs 15,000. Here, the calculation is 12% of 15,000 because the wage limit for EPF deduction is capped at Rs 15,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-read-aloud-multi-block=\"true\">\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">An employee can contribute more than 12% of Rs 15,000 if they wish to do so. However, there is no obligation that the employer has to match the employee\u2019s contribution. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EPF-payment-and-return-filing-due-date\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">EPF payment and return filing due date<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">EPF is deducted from every employee\u2019s salary, and the payment due date is by 15th of the following month. For instance, if you want to deposit the EPF contribution for May, then as an employer you should clear all the payments before the 15th of June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">The EPF payment and return filing date are apparently the same, and you can process both at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">Therefore, the due date of the EPF return is the same as the payment date, which is before 15th of the following month. data-speechify-sentence=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">In the case of challan <a href=\"https:\/\/razorpay.com\/blog\/online-payments-failure-reasons\/\">payment failure<\/a>, these penalties
